At that moment Andreas, who had joined the group the morning after leaving the body of a jongleur in the woods near Provins, was sitting outside the cathedral, waiting for one of the canons to return with the answer to his question.
He stretched out in the sun and yawned. The fluc des fols that he was traveling were becoming tedious, especially in their refusal to provide meat or fornicate. But traveling with them as a pilgrim had been useful. And it was possible that he could get a reward for denouncing them.
But not yet.
If there were really a whole nest of heretics in Köln, then it could be much more profitable to discover the names of the leaders, their so-called bishops, and then come to the authorities with proof of the apostasy.
He wondered who the important leader was that they were supposed to be meeting here. Astolfo and Lanval didn’t trust him enough to let him go with them, but Andreas knew he’d find out soon enough and that would be just another bit of gold to add to his purse.
With visions of wealth swimming before him, Andreas nearly missed the canon’s return. The man was bending over him with an expression of distasteful duty.
“Archdeacon Bolso will see you,” he said. “But you’ll need to give him solid facts before he’ll believe this tale of yours.”
Andreas rose with one graceful movement. He bowed to the canon.
“I assure you,” he promised. “The archdeacon will not be disappointed.”
He fingered the leather bag around his neck and felt the reassuring crackle of the parchment he had stolen from the juggler. A curse written in the devil’s own tongue, that’s what the priest in Metz had said. With this curse, Andreas intended to lay the foundations for his fortune.
